Oceanography Seminar

April 25, 3:00pm - 4:00pm
Mānoa Campus, Marine Science Building #100

Oceanography Seminar: Julia Fiedler, Thursday, April 25, 2024, 3:00pm, MSB 100 "Observations and Modeling of Wave-Induced Coastal Flooding" Understanding how and why coastal areas flood is becoming more important as sea levels continue to rise. We have many models to predict flooding, but we need to constantly update them with new data to make sure they're accurate, especially as the shape of the seabed and coastlines change quickly. This seminar will look at how we can use both on-site and remote data about water levels and wave effects to make our flood predictions better. We'll talk about the concept of Total Water Level, how we use LiDAR technology to get detailed info on beaches and waves, and how local community monitoring through smartphones can gather important data to validate our models.
